We have a Christmastime tradition to make one of these cute houses.
We lay out a table cloth, separate the candy into individual dishes,
get the icing ready and begin.
You would think that putting this pre-baked gingerbread house
would be easy to put together, right?
Not in our house.
The directions are simple.
Step 1: use icing to put the 4 walls of gingerbread together to form the house.
Step 2: more icing to put on the roof.
Gotta taste it, too.
Step 3: Put icing on other parts of the house
so we can put some candies all around.
Then - BOOM, BANG...
The roof begins sliding off.
Gravity. Uuurgh!
It's like a slow-motion, bad movie.
The girls have become accustomed to this action over the years.
They don't panic.
They simply start packing on more icing to put it back together.
We try again.
Back to the candy application...
Things are looking up.
We think it's going to stay put.
NOPE.
More icing, please.
Bet you can't figure out which is our house
and which is the picture of the manufacturer's box.
Maybe I need some new kitchen tools to help us out.
Even though our tradition doesn't offer perfection,
it's fun!!
What are your family traditions?

I had to smile when I read this because the same thing happened to us when we tried to make it. Every time I set out to do a project, particularly if it involves frosting, it doesn't go as planned. They make it look so easy on the box! I think yours looks beautiful though. Have a great day!!
ReplyDeleteI have a real love/hate relationship with gingerbread houses. Every time we try to make them they look end up looking more like the candy bowl threw up on them then anything resembling the picture on the box. That said, it still is fun to keep trying. I bet your girls fondest memories will be of how funny it was when the roof kept sliding off!! In the end that's all that really matters.
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed that you have the patience to even try making a g-bread house. It looks so complicated to me, and I know we'd just eat all the candy before the house was even built! I'd probably end up breaking out the hot glue gun for the roof too.
ReplyDeleteDon't feel bad, yours looks better than ours ever has! We let the kids each decorate a side, it's rather amusing to watch. :)
ReplyDeleteElizabeth's godmother brings one of these kits every year for Cookie Day. We've never managed to actually get one built. Last year we totally gave up and built a Gingerbread Junkyard instead - it wasn't pretty, but it still tasted good!
