Oh no I didn't....

Oh no I didn't.....say yes to this creature becoming a part of our clan!
T-Bone was surprised.
The girls were surprised
I WAS SURPRISED!

Let me rewind about 40 years....eeeeek - did I just write that?
I can't be that old.
That's a whole 'nother post.
Nana, my wonderful Grandma, used to bring home all kinds of pets for my sisters and me.
We had ducks.
We had a birds.
We had dogs.
We had reptiles.
We had A HUGE TORTOISE.
Like the ones a small child could ride upon.
It was so cool to have lots of pets.
My memories came rushing to me....and that brings me to the here and now.

Here's the deal.  Our neighbor came over yesterday and said their friend dropped off a tortoise at their house but they already lost it.  I said we'd keep our eyes open in case it strutted our way.  The day rolled on and no sign of green guy.  Done.  No more thoughts about it.

In the afternoon I had to run out to pick-up the girls' Girl Scout cookie orders.  When I returned, I noticed the dude sitting on our grass as I pulled into our driveway.  I scooped him up - he retracted into his shell - and walked into the house to show the girls.  Sweet Cheeks was super excited!  She began holding the reptile and talking to it.  Sweet, huh?  Sugar Nugget was napping as she's had a fever for the past 2 days.  When she woke up, she was excited to see the tortoise, too.

I explained to the girls that our neighbors got this beast earlier today and it went missing.  We were holding onto it until they returned home.

I grabbed the dog kennel (that had been sitting outside for months), cleaned it up.  Sugar Nugget got some water and some lettuce and carrots ready.  We put the dude into the kennel with his food and water.  This would make a nice temporary - I said TEMPORARY - home.

Looks like a nice, clean temporary home.  Right??

Later, T-Bone and Sugar Nugget headed over to the neighbors and proudly told them we've found their tortoise.
We'd saved the day!
Found their pet!
Turns out they don't want it.
Apparently, their friend just dropped it off and said he'd found it.  They didn't know how to care for it, what it was (turtle/tortoise, etc.), what its habitat should be, etc.  They didn't want it.  T-Bone comes home and announces this.  The girls began asking "can we have it?" "can we, please?".  T-Bone sensibly says "no".  I said "why not?".
SAY WHAT?
DID THAT REALLY COME OUT OF MY MOUTH?
I CHIWAWA.....NO BUENO.

So, we have a new pet.
The girls have lovingly named it Jack.
Yeah - we don't know if it's a boy or a girl.

Carly is watching it like a hawk and barks at it frequently.

Bailey and Max don't know what to think.

Here's my logic behind this crazy endeavor.
How hard can it be?
We'll google and figure out what to do.
We've always got dark green veggies here.
Water, too.
Should be interesting!

  4. Oh Darlene... You are awesome. Wish I was able to meet the beast yesterday. Hang in there. At least he doesn't eat your curtains and chew your window casings like Charlie. :)

  5. Sounds like you made a couple of girls very happy! You are starting to look like me and my petting zoo! All you need are a few lizards and a hedgehog....maybe they will creep into your yard next!

  6. How fun!!! I love that you kept it, but I would have no idea either...we sometimes find some here in the spring when I take the girls outside and we always have to have a box ready to bring it home momentarily...so cute and I love that your pup is waiting and watching:)
