When a tortoise is clawing at the cage all day - you know it's not happy.
When a tortoise knocks over his water and food 10 times a day - you must put more water and food in the kennel.

When a tortoise walks right into your salt walter pool - you know it may not be the right thing.
When you have to scoop him out of the pool with a net - you know it may not be a water tortoise.
When the tortoise goes right back into the pool and you have to scoop it out again - you know something may be wrong.
When you realize the tortoise isn't meant to be in a chemically treated salt pool - you must rinse him in the bathtub.
After you rinse him off in the tub - you must sanitize the tub with a chemical, bleachy solution.

When a tortoise creates more work for me - you know it's not going to stay.
We just don't know how to take care of the tortoise.
So, we did the responsible thing.
We called Prehistoric Pets, a great store that specializes in all types of reptiles, and they said they'd accept him and care for him.

So, Sweet Cheeks and I drove Jack to Huntington Beach.
We dropped off Jack.
The girl who helped us said it was a boy because it had a long tail.
She put Jack into a large, merky pond and Jack began swimming like a natural.
So, Jack didn't need a salt-water, clean pool or tub water - he needed nasty, smelly swamp water.
And, we learned that he was a water tortoise (no wonder he was clawing at the kennel all day).

Jack looked happy.
There he is with the darkest shell on the left.

It was fun while it lasted.

ReplyDeleteMama doesn't need anymore work, right? Can I get an AMEN!?!?
ReplyDeleteWow, you are so lucky that the pet store would take him. He seems very happy now. And you and the girls can go visit him. :)
ReplyDeleteI had a turtle once. The water ones ARE smelly creatures. Glad you found him a nice home and no longer have to worry about turtle poop in your kick-butt swimming pool.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful they took him in...so happy he looks:)
